Funny how a life can be summed up in five words: White walls and beige carpet.
But, to be more succinct, the past five years could be summed up in one: emptiness.
James made one final walk through the apartment. The kitchen only used for TV dinners was cleaned, tho the microwave had to be tossed out. All the empty whisk bottles had been cleared out of the living room. The bathroom had been sanitized. The bedroom where he relearned to sleep alone was now empty.
He remembered when they first moved in. A new life, a new start, things would get better. That was five years ago. She's been gone for three of them. Things were supposed to get better. They never did. Three years in a haze. It was time to let it go. A new job and a new city. Time to move on. Time to let go. Time to leave.
Pulling on his trench coat with a sigh it was time to go. After pulling his long pony tail out of the back of his coat and letting it fall, he picked up the canvas laptop case next to him. “Good bye” he said as he closed the door then headed down the walk.
Fishing a cigarette out and lighting it he turned back.
“Good bye, Sasha.” he said and set off down the road as it began to rain.
